Flank March and Deployment

I did my first Flank March last weekend. As we deployed I did what I thought was correct, but couldn't find guidance in the rules. I had an 8 battle group army, so 2-2-2-2 deployment. My flank marching BGs were in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th deployment positions. I lost the initiative roll.
  • I placed my first BG on the table top and then showed my opponent the 2nd group and said they are in the flank march and set them aside.
My opponent deployed his first quartile.
I showed him my 3rd BG and stated it was in the flank march and then deployed my 4th group on the table top.
My opponent deployed his 2nd quartile.
I placed my 4th unit on the table top and showed my opponent my 5th BG and put it aside with the flank march.
My opponent deployed his 3rd quartile.
I completed my 4th quartile on the tabletop.
My opponent completed his 4th quartile.
After the game I went looking to the answer for how to deploy with flank marches and didn't find it. Did I do that right? The alternative would have been been to place the all the flank march units aside to start and reconfigure my table top deployment into a 2-1-1-1.

Thanks
Scot

You did it wrong.

You just subract 3 from your total BG's, so it would have gone:

2.2.1.0 -

1st, 4th
6th, 7th
8th.

Sorry, that sounded rude... didn't mean to - I'm just a bit sick.

What I said was correct tho...

You'll find the rule in the "Deploying Battle groups" section. Which is just after "outflanking marches" in the Appendix:

"All battle groups except those in ambush or on an outflanking march are deployed in the order listed in the order of march. The number of battle groups to be deployed in each batch is pre-determined as above. Battle groups in ambush or on an outflanking march are omitted, and the next battle groups in the order of march must be deployed instead. Thus the correct number of battle groups must be deployed in each batch, until all visible on-table battle groups have been deployed. As a result, there may be no battle groups left to deploy in the last batch."

You get a benefit in doing it this way, in that unitl you deploy your later batches, your opponent doesn't know for sure you are flank marching.

Though you may need all the advantage you can get to hold the enemy up with only 5 BGs on table!

What it also says is that after deploying camps you must write down which flank and the total number of BGs on the march.

When you roll the correct number needed either a 9 or 10 you tell your opponent which side and the number of battle groups.a Only when you deploy them on the table do you need to inform your opponent, and these can be deployed at any time in your manouvre phase. After this I actually show the opponent the written down order for the flank march to show them which side i wanted it to come on more usually in a tournement game..
