Dead crew, what happens to the artillery guns ?

From a game last night.
My mounted managed to kill an artillery battery with shooting. We assumed the guns stayed in place so that when the supporting foot were charged by my cavalry, the cavalry could have broken the foot, but not pursued them.
Is this right ?

Before I start I'll qualify that I am a newby,
Anyway I believe you are correct as the I have been trawling through the rules at this very situation, as I interpert them the crew are dead but the guns are still in place, Assuming that the supporting inf are broken by your cav in the ensuing impact and melee phases a following up pike and shotte BG can capture the guns if they come into conact with them. They also cause units within 3MU's to take a cohesion test. The guns can then be rotated 180 degrees after a CMT (however I'm not sure if this is done at immediately or in the subsequent movement phase.
Cheers

I was using Early Russian ( False Dmitri version ) v Later 30 yw Catholic, and my 6 packs of arquebus armed Cossack foot spent the entire game sitting happily in an enclosed field, not wanting to tangle with musket armed foes.
The cavalry did the damage, the superior unarmoured Dvor shooting down a cuirassier regiment who refused to charge them for fear of running into 2 bg of Polish winged hussars sat smiling in support of the Dvor.
Eventaully one of these bg turned 90* and marched off to help a 3rd bg of the winged ones charge a German infantry unit frontally and rout it.

It would have to be attempted at the beginning of your next movement phase I believe.

Paul,
If I correctly understand the situation, I don't think you had this right.
Any BG is removed from play when reduced to only 1 base.

I agree - the artillery are simply removed from play.
They are only captured if contacted by enemy.

Seems fair enough, although I still wonder how a couple of guns & limbers manage to stop a charging mounted unit dead in their tracks in the first place.
I would have thought becoming disordered would be the fairest outcome for the mounted.

We have always removed them if one gun dies in our games too. No chance to recapture them. Guess the powder barrels blew up and killed the crew and destroyed the guns

They don't necessarily stop dead - the break in a move sequence between turns is an arbitrary game mechanic, so two the turns could represent one continuous movement
The other issue is whether horse should be able to move through friendly artillery (which is what enemy artillery becomes once it is contacted) - my guess would be that this might well create other unwanted effects were it allowed.

Refer to page 130. Broken artillery and battle wagons are simply removed from the table. So even if the artillery broke through failed tests rather than base loss it would be removed.

I think this reflects that the guns can't be captured, easier to just remove them and remove the temptation to recrew a dead battery. Guess it is a simple game mechanic thingy which works well I think.
