Visual appeal

hello,
Leeds was to include a prize for "best terrain". My hope is AoW will allow players to be able to produce visually stunning tables over which a miniature game is played. As such, is it possible to have hills that rise above the table, woods that actually have trees on them, marshes that look boggy, villages with houses, etc etc...
Or does the rules insist upon terrain that makes it possible to measure that last micrometer?

AoW is far less fussy about precise distances than some other rules. Yes you may or may not be in charge range or missile range but trying to find out if you can get just a tiny part of one of your bases behind your opponents general is not something that happens in AoW.
I for one will be browsing the terrain suppliers at the Triples this weekend.

Good to know Hammy.
As we've discuss on other sites, the ancients tournament community has disappointed in providing visual games. Coming from a maker of computer games, I have high hopes with AoW to see a 180 degree turn with the manner in which a tournament is presented to the passer-bys.
BTC and that Auzzie outfit makes very nice rubber terrain pieces. Travels perfectly by not losing their shape even if crammed in a tool box.

Who won the terrain prize at Leeds?

I think that the terrain prize was won by Matt Haywood but I am not sure as he wasn't there at the presentation.
On my list to buy this weekend are some huts, some nicer trees (although the ones I have now are OK) flock, resin to do water and stuff like that so I can make some nice terrain.
I am thinking of using thin plywood (probably only 1 or 2mm) giving it an uneven edge and terraining it like I do my bases then expanding on my collection of rocky, scrubby, woody, markers so I can make more terrain types.
I need to make some hedges, a lake, several ploughed fields and a nice BUA, I am thinking of a well in the middle of a collection of huts.

Is that in case RBS introduces a "thirst" rule like in DBM?

Thirst after the 3rd pair of bounds if the bar has shut.

Matt did indeed win the prize but left early due to his long journey so doesn't know it yet
We would like to see a big improvement in terrain and visual appeal. I can't say we achieved that in Leeds yet but we have made a start.....
Matts stuff was very nice though - Egyptian temples complete with sevearl 80mm tall Anubis statues - no wonder the nemey were scared...I thought they were his generals for a while!! Enough to worry Brendan Foster in the Mummy it was.
I had a true piece ofimpassible terrain for my Indians - a cliff faced plateau which I plan to turn into the hilltop palace of Sayagriya in Sri Lanka at some point.

Look into Old Glorys ancient & dark age camp sets. The latter includes two buildings, 8-12 individual castings of "common folk" and a well. $14.00US.
