Basically troops that are either known for a ferocious charge, or lob a volley of heavy weapons at their foes before closing in to close combat. So Celts/Gauls, Frankish warbands, Roman legions etc. Some medieval troops like the Almalhogars as well. Good troops, only ones that get ++ Poa when charging into other foot besides pikes.

Yeah, I've seen references in the help and wiki but couldn't find a description anywhere. If I choose one of those in a game, will it say they're impact foot or is there a way to know?

Impact Foot isnt a class of troops per say but is an impact weapon like pikes, lances offensive spears etc , they will likly have sword capability for melee as well. In the dag lists youll see "impact foot", sword under the close combat area signifying their capabiliies and in a game, if you hover over a unit, the unit box below will give all the units capibilities: weapons, quality drilled/undrilled etc.

Generally they will be listed as "impact foot, sword" in the game.

Ah, that's good. I really don't know anything about ancient or medieval warfare but I'm learning.

What do you think of the game so far, Rich? I know you are a stickler when it comes to a good AI

I like it quite a bit. Taking me a while to understand all the different stuff since I knew nothing about warfare in this era. And I've been spending way too much time with Flight Simulator which has hampered my playing time. The ai seems adequate for me. One thing I believe is that generals back then were't tactical geniuses and made mistakes. So if the ai isn't perfect, it's ok. If and when I ever get really good, I'll give the ai a bonus. But this game is addicting in that you want to play one more turn and not too many are like that.
