If you have more than 2 units next to any enemy unit, does this have an extra "mass attack" benefit over just having two?

Every valid (not AD guns) adjacent unfired (still has the red crosshair icon) unit contributes to mass attack, there is no limit.

Thanks, I didn't know that, BTW What are AD guns? Do you mean AA or AT?

Well, the limit is 6 units around the defender hex
If you surround a unit all 6 sides the ist unit you FIRE causes a -5 initiative penalty to the defender, then -4 , -3 etc .. The last unit you fire gets no bonus (assuming the defender survives that long)

Sometimes I try to hold one unit back, though, in case the attached unit retreats and would otherwise lose contact with my forces (and therefore be able to reinforce fully)...
