Crocus Plain 353BC (FPSC game 4)

Battle of Crocus Field

Subsequent events are unclear, but a battle was fought between the Macedonians and the Phocians, probably as Philip tried to prevent the Phocians uniting forces with the Pheraeans, and crucially, before the Athenians had arrived. According to Diodorus, the two armies met on a large plain near the sea, probably in the vicinity of Pagasae.

The 'Crocus Field' in Thessaly matches this description, and the battle is therefore now known as the Battle of Crocus Field; however, this plain is so large that firmly identifying the battle-site has proved impossible.
Philip sent his men into battle wearing crown of laurel, the symbol of the Apollo; "as if he was the avenger...of sacrilege, and he proceeded to battle under the leadership, as it were, of the god”

Some of the Phocian mercenaries supposedly threw down their arms, panged by their guilty consciences. In the ensuing battle, the bloodiest recorded in ancient Greek history, Philip won a decisive victory against the Phocians. The battle seems to have been won by superior numbers and valour of Philip's cavalry.

Fleeing from defeat, the Phocians ran to the sea, where Chares's fleet had arrived during the battle, but many men were killed during the pursuit, or drowned as they tried to reach the ships. In total, 6,000 Phocian troops had been killed including Onormarchos, and another 3000 taken prisoner.

Onomarchos was either hanged or crucified and the other prisoners drowned, as ritual demanded for temple-robbers.These punishments were designed to deny the defeated an honourable burial; Philip thus continued to present himself as the pious avenger of the sacrilege committed by the Phocians.

Buckler states that: "Nor should one automatically assume that a mass-drowning...would shock the Greek world. Even the mild-tempered Isocrates felt that the Phocian mercenaries were better off dead than alive...Dreadful indeed was the punishment, but it was entirely consistent with Philip's role as Apollo's champion".

Hi, can anyone post the files for this game somewhere for me to download them? Unfortunately this is not a RoR scenario so I don't have access to it :(

My final game is against Pantherboy, so it may be a blessing if no one can post it

Thanks,
Mobio

I think when you look across all the results, it will show that it was hard to shine in this scenario - not much scope for good generalship with no terrain and very little room to manoevre. Just slam the lines together and hope your Phokians get good dice....which ours didn't.

Archie, are you open to player input on scenarios?

If so, can I kick this off with 2 chronological suggestions:
Paraitacene - Room to manoevre, some terrain, enough force variations....not to mention the Elite Pikemen :)
Lautulae - Samnites vs Early Romans...very different forces, terrain could make a big difference

Archie, are you open to player input on scenarios?
Yes... welcome suggestions, perhaps everbody should elect three scenarios... from a timeline, such as 490BC-310BC... then we pick up the most voted.

Any veiws...

I don't know the scenarios well enough to say which would be better. But I'm happy to play any you choose.
