Buccaneers vs Scots Covenanter's (I think)

Definitely Buccaneers... What the Scots where I'm not 100% sure of...

Anyway - it was an interesting game.

Buccaneers won initiative, and selected "Tropical".

Lesson 1 - probably something like hilly, with lots of brush would be better. I'm toying with the idea of a coast, but we'll have to check out other options.

The terrain ended up with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the middle. A massive terrain feature consisting of 1 double sized Wood butted up against 2 single sized marshes.

Lesson 2 - don't roll 6's when doing setup.

My deployment was 'ok' but could have been better. I deployed my artillery in a good position, but because I didn't think things through I actually masked them for the first shot with dragoons and light infantry. That was a 'newbie' mistake. I won't make it again, so I won't call it a 'lesson' - it's just one of those things that you get better with once you've played a few games.

The first combats were quite good. I completely blew away one of the cavalry BG's with artillery.

I was then lucky with my first impact with the cavalry against my superior buccaneers. It ended up with 2 hits each and no death. I made a big mistake by 'expanding to match an existing overlap' which bought me within 12" of the side edge. This 'extra 1' caused me to fragment instead of disrupt in the melee phase. I additionally had my GC in the wrong place and no rear support.

Lesson 3 - rear support is VITALLY important in FOG:R.

The cavalry did very well on one flank, but I can see the possibility of the Buccaneers in an open comp. They will struggle against 'all mounted' armies, or armies that have a lot of mounted, but will do exceptionally against foot. I didn't do particularly well against the foot, but that was because of the immense terrain in the middle.

Overall, a good enjoyable learning game.

Is anyone ever 100% sure what the Scots are ?
