Hi, so I own Spartan, and am thinking of getting Gates of Troy as well. My roommate is considering buying Spartan, but is hesitant to spring for GoT as well, due to budget limitations of your average college student. So my question is, if I got Troy, and installed it over my Spartan copy (thus enabling me to play Spartan campaigns through Troy) and if he got Spartan, would we be able to play a Spartan campaign via LAN? Or do we both have to have the same version (i.e. both just Spartan or both GoT)?

You would be able to play Spartan maps, but not Troy.
