Is it cheaper to upgrade within a series?

Is it cheaper to upgrade within a series? e.g. from an earlier generation Panzer III to a later one, as opposed to change to a Panzer IV, or from an earlier 8 RAD Recon to a later One, instead of from a 4 or 6 RAD to an 8 RAD? If so, does this apply to all types, and how can one tell if something is from the same series? e.g. I presume all BF 109s are part of a series, but does a JU 88 lead to a JU 188 or an HE111 to a He177 etc.? Do all towed gun artillery upgrade cheaply to the next bigger one (10.5cm to 15cm to 17cm etc.)? Is this documented somewhere? Thanks!

Pretty much yes to all the above
SO far as I've upgraded my towed artillery its been at a discount going from 10.5 to 15 to 17 and now upto 21
Planes wise you should find Bf109s upgrade cheaply and you shuold find Ju88s lead to others in the Ju series cheaply but not HEs
The only non intuative "cheap" upgrades would be infantry......wehr and grenadiers are the same "model" so upgrade to eachother for a discount and to the 43 versions the same but all other infantry seems to be a seperat "model" only upgrading to thier own 43 type with a discount
I'm not sure about recons because I've never bought any let alone upgraded them!
Hope that helps

Thanks, so its cheaper to upgrade a wehrmacht Inf to grenadier than to a pioneer for example? I never new that!
I'd be interested if someone could confirm about the recon units upgrade paths, though, as I actually quite like recon units!

I don't see a huge use for them in campaign play against the AI...1 extra spotting over my regualr ground troops? Nah give me the raw combat power!
Plus I've got a couple of heros with +1 spotting too which really invallidates the need for those 3 spotting armoured cars

But doesn't recon have other benefits, e.g. I thought they're meant to be able to slip past enemy ZOC more easily than other units?

Yes they can multi move which could prove useful if a badly depleted enemy unit retreats to where other guys cant get to them but on the other hand thats a rare occurence if you plan ahead so rare IMO that I'd rather have the combat power of a regular unit that comes in useful far more often!

I wouldn't want to try to play an MP game without good recon, that's for sure. The AI may be dumb enough to let me get away with it but a human player never would - he'd outflank me in an instant!

I'll have to take your word for that as I've not played against a human up till now

You should give it a try - great fun.
I have avatar envy - 5 more posts to get me a nice shiny Pz III.

Allied equipment has not yet been configured to upgrade in series (p-51B to P-51D for example), so be warned in multiplayer.

No incremental upgrade that I could find.

Recon cars are already the cheapest units though. Top end recon car (Puma) only costs 236. What's the best tank you can buy at that price? Pz38(t) at 238.

Though it would be nice to have some sort of incentive for going the 8-RAD route early on, at the moment the 4 wheeled recon looks better, because of the the air defense value

But a more expensive tank can be used in combat, recon units later on the game are too frail.
It was in PG3D or PGIII where recons had a Survivor ability that made them harder to kill?
