Is facing purely cosmetic?

I'm loving the game, but I have a question. Is unit facing purely cosmetic, or does it have any effect on gameplay? Why do units sometimes face left, and sometimes right?
Thanks!

Yes, the director did not like the first cut so he ordered our graphic artist to put cosmetics on all the units.

Heh. OK, cosmetic it is.

@Grotius, they are pointing to the direction they moved from. So, if the unit went from left to right, it will point towards the right and vice versa. They will also point in the direction where an attack comes from. Same thing applies to enemy units.

8 or 16 different direction looks so mutch better + unit animations, but that a lot of work.

Along this line… Facing of the unit is cosmetic – and I know that two units next to an enemy unit give you better odds on the attacks… But if you have two units on opposite sides of an enemy unit, does that give you an even more advantage? In other words, can you attack from the units front and then from their rear for more of a powerful attack?

no, no positional advantage for attacking from opposite directions.
