Bruce challenge: sixth battle - Faughart 1318

After the very costly victory at Skerries, Edward the Bruce had returned to Ulster where he was confident enough to have himself crowned High King of Ireland in May 1316. In September he finally captured Carrickfergus castle, the main Anglo-Irish stronghold in Ulster and after this success he briefly returned to Scotland to recruit more soldiers. Robert the Bruce came to Ireland in 1317 but the expedition launched in February brought few tangible gains and large parts of Limerick were devastated. Ireland was also suffering very badly from famine at this time. robert the Bruce and Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray returned to Scotland in May 1317 leaving Edward Bruce to continue on alone. In the autumn of 1318 he took his army southwards once more and gave battle to a much larger Anglo-Irish force, led by Sir John de Bermingham, at Faughart Hill in October . . .
