Not sure, but should units be allowed to walk on lakes?

I believe the lake is frozen over due to the snow cover (the same thing happens for rivers). Once the snow thaws, you will no longer be able to move onto the water. You can move them off once it thaws, but it would be kind of funny if they would drown if you didn't move them off in time.

They did it in driving supply trucks over that frozen lake to Leningrad during the siege of the latter. I do think that if you are on a lake and it thaws, you should sink, hehe. (Hey, another way to take out Tiger II's in this game!)

Don't try this at home.

How did the Italian tank get to the middle of the lake? (No I did not place it there with cheats or through the editor.)
Well, that lake was frozen in previous turns.
Then the sun came out.
This screenshot is from actually from the BETA, this problem has since been addressed. That large lake in Bersaglieri and the Bear is configured not to freeze, although that small lake you see in Moscow still freezes.

Was the solution the same as the tip I read about in some other thread (to make the water "deep sea" instead of "lake; then simply changing the text string to read "lake")...?
Or did something actually change between beta and now?

Nope, the solution from the BETA is still in effect.
