If the path is partially blocked by a friendly unit can you shift to avoid friends as described under movement or can you not recoil at all and suffer the consequences?

Thanks,
James

I've read those pages. I can't see a definitive statement ruling out a "slide" to avoid friends. I can see in bullet number 1 on page 107 that a unit which contacts a friendly BG must halt. I can also see in bullet number 3 on the same page that a unit which would otherwise contact an UNfriendly BG halts 1 MU from said unit.

I can't though find any discussion, pro or con, on sliding up to half a base to avoid friends which seems to be the issue in question.

Am I missing it?

Well the is nothing that says you can shift in "break off". The rules say in the break off section:
When breaking off, a battle group moves straight back.
So there is no permission to deviate from "straight back".

Page 106, last paragraph on right side, "...the battle group ends the break off move seperated from its opponent .... facing them .... the same frontage as before."

also

Page 107, first bullet, "If the move is blocked by friendly battle group ...the battle group halts when it touches this.

So the unit moves straight back in same formation and ends facing the enemy. It does not shift, interpenetrate, slide, etc.

I think you're looking at it the wrong way round. You need to read the section on Shifting (sorry don't have the page ref). This says "An advance can include a free sideways shift in the following circumstances only".

So it's not that all moves can have a shift unless excluded, it's that only advances are allowed to have them. A break off move is clearly not an advance.
