To make sense of this article, read Jerusalem via Leeds parts 1, 2 and 3 first, ideally in sequence :)

After lunch and a quick tour of the Armouries (nice war elephant, impressive mongol cavalryman) it was time for the last game.

Game 4 was against Phil Lewis??™ Early Imperial Romans.

Phil was unlucky in that I??™d just been roughly handled by a Roman army and now had some ideas on how to play a Republican/ Early Imperial Roman. It meant??¦ that I had a plan. Or more precisely, I now had a better plan than my last one.

Without a working camera, and no batteries to be found in the Royal Armouries building, I??™ll keep my description brief.

I adopted a similar deployment to my previous 3 games ??“ spearmen in the centre, missiles & turcoploes on one wing, the Bedouin on the other. The knights were again in reserve.

Paul had his iron legionaries in the centre, in two lines, with light troops and auxilia on the flanks, mainly in broken ground. A unit of cavalry was held in reserve.

I managed to attack the Roman support troops over the course of the game, whilst holding back with the spearmen. I couldn??™t delay contact with the legionaries for too long, but by the time they engaged my spearmen I was making reasonable inroads into the Roman support troops. My spearmen eventually started to crumble after putting up a spirited resistance, but by then I??™d destroyed enough support troops to get the game.

So, two wins, two losses. All the games proceeded at a quick pace, all were enjoyable and all had a result. Particularly notable was the way that people unfamiliar with the rules could play a reasonable game. You don??™t need to be ???technically familiar??? with the rules to play a decent game.

Awesome battle reports and photos. Many thanks Neil on behalf of all the AoW virgins out there.

I take it then that religious conviction is no substitute for a sound plan of action - now all we have to do is pass that message on to world leaders

Cheers

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the battle reports - these really help to get across how the game feels. I'm interested in your view of the effectiveness of shooting - in a couple of your games shooting seems to have been fairly effective against heavy foot in a way that doesn't happen in DBM. Did the balance feel OK?

Regards

Marc

Marc,

At this stage I don't feel shooting is over-effective. It's a novelty to be able to shoot with "psiloi" and cavalry so there is that element to the new rules.

The times I've been badly shot-up is when my opponent has managed to concentrate two units onto my one - and generally that has been when my single unit has been isolated on the end of a line. There are quite strict target priority sequence rules so a shooter can't ignore a unit to front and shoot diagonally in order to concentrate fire on an enemy unit.

I've had some heavy infantry disrupted from shooting in the middle of the line but the odds weren't great - my opponent just managed to throw good dice and I then threw poor dice for the morale test. And I've done the same to my opponent.

Generally shooting won't disrupt infantry unless they are unarmoured or they are isolated. Mounted troops (unless very heavily armoured) are more vulnerable to shooting, but that seems reasonable.

My view is that the balance is okay, but more play testing will reveal if there is a problem.

That's historical for Feudal & HYW English Longbowmen shooting at the Scots who had no armour & little protection, & the Welsh no kind of protection at all.
The French of course are a different matter, having armour &/or protection, depending on the quality of Foot.

Cheers,
Jer

Thanks for the great AAR!

I have a 25mm Early Crusader army, that I am anxiously waiting to try. Thanks for the inspiration.
