What is the significance of the unit strength points changing colours (yellow-red..)?

Does this affect surrender potential? How is surrender determined?

Strength color indicates suppression, and yes, among other things it effects surrender potential. A unit retreats if it is fully suppressed, and so long-termn suppression caused on previous attacks contributes to this. If there is nowhere to retreat, the unit surrenders.

The plan, eventually, is to match this color coding with the suppression color coding you see on the quick information panel on the right.

If a unit is mildly suppressed, the strength plate is white, the negative number is white (It's currently blue)
If a unit is more suppressed, the strength plate is yellow, the negative number is yellow(It's currently blue)
If a unit is extremely suppressed, the strength plate is red, the negative number is red(It's currently blue)

This should help people make the intuitive connection better than the unassociated coloring we currently have in place.

And, to avoid confusion, a unit retreats only if its entrenchment value has been reduced to zero (i.e. it was no higher than 1 just prior to the attack in question), even if it is/becomes fully suppressed.
