Early Imperial Roman vs Mithridates of Pontus. 800pts.
Start time 21:10, Saturday 10th, end time 04:15 Sunday 11th. (Yes, 7hrs 5mins!)
Result (as per 6.01 p59): 16-4 to Mithridates. (14/14 BGs of Romans broken for 10/16 BGs of Pontics).
I'm really not sure why it took so long though there were a couple of combats that lasted an awful long time, with the Pontic heavy cavalry and Sarmatian cavalry repeatedly bouncing of Legionaries, with no effect on either side. Indeed one such combat started in the third turn, and was still underway when the Romans finally broke, with only the the loss of 1 base from the Sarmatians to show for it!
The game was lost on the Roman right, which after failing to capitalise on some badly positioned Pontic BGs for several hours, finally all broke when two BGs of 4 Legionaries dropped, then double dropped, against one BG of Thureopheroi, causing a couple of close-by Auxiliary units (acting as buffers against the Pontic HC) to become fragmented and break. This, with the loss of a few skirmishers here and there, was enough to swing the game.
Do we get a prize for the longest game so far?
