Battle of Gaugamela
The Battle of Gaugamela took place in331 BC between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. The battle, which is also called the Battle of Arbela, resulted in a massive victory for the Ancient Macedonians and led to the fall of the Achaemenid Empire.
Date October 1, 331 BC
Location Probably Tel Gomel (Gaugamela) near Mosul ,not far from Irbil (Arbela), which also is a name of the battle (Battle of Arbela).
Result Decisive Macedonian victory.
Territorial.changes Alexander wins half of Persia.
Belligerents
Alexander the Great, Macedon, & Southern Greek allies (47000 men)
Vs
Darius III, Achaemenid Empire, & Greek mercenaries (53000 to 100,000 men)
Darius, fearing a night attack, kept his army awake and on alert for the whole night, while Alexander's was more rested.
While Darius had a significant advantage in numbers, most of his troops were of a lower quality than Alexander's. Alexander's pezhetairoi were armed with a six-meter spear, the sarissa.
The main Persian infantry was poorly trained and equipped in comparison to Alexander's pezhetairoi and hoplites. The only respectable infantry Darius had were his 10,000 Greek hoplites[5] and his personal bodyguard, the 10,000 Persian Immortals.[11] The Greek mercenaries fought in a phalanx, armed with a heavy shield but with spears no longer than three meters, while the spears of the Immortals were 2 meters long.
Among the other Persian troops, the most heavily armed were the Armenians who were armed the Greek way, and probably fought as a phalanx. The rest of Darius's contingents were much more lightly armed; the main weapon of the Achaemenid army historically was the bow and arrow, and javelin.

Yes, it is. That may mean you will need to accept the challenge or have it copied as a custom scenario. I assume you'd just have to edit the scenario but make no changes and just rename it then you'll be able to have access to it without owning IF.

Hey Archie, can you please remind me how the scoring is calculated. I expected to be at the bottom of the table, given the thrashing panterboy gave me in the last game.

Well done everybody.....
as there were 27 battlegroups, you lost 15+14 battlegroups. 27-29= -2 (points). That being -7% percentage of 27. Over the two games some lost more battlegroups.
Your league position is the over the two games is 58+-7= 51/2=26% (Looks like it rounded up!)
Hope that helps.

Ferb (Persians) 33/41 - Arminius (Macedonians) 42/40
Ferb (Macedonians) 47/40 - Arminius (Persians) 17/41
Two wins for the Persians, seems like another scenario that doesn't reflect history.
As the Persians I formed up the Scythed chariots and advanced them into the pike phalanxes which had formed into a line. The Macedonian right flank consisting of hoplites and MF formed an angle from the phalanxes to the base line to protect them from my massed left flank cavalry. The macedonian left was a looser collection of cavalry and MF. The Persian right flank cavalry engaged these units in a long fight coming out marginally on top. In the centre the scythed chariots did some damage to the pike before they evaporated. The greeks/elephant and chariots following up had some success but nothing conclusive. On the Persian left the cavalry kept hammering the hoplites with repeated charges and breakoffs eventually wearing them down. A win for the Persians but not that conclusive.
My tactics as the macedonians were a bad choice as i advanced the pike blocks forward pushing back the opposing cavalry and mostly avoiding the scythed chariots. However this exposed my hoplites and MF to the chariots and persian cavalry and scythed chariots. Basically I was too spread out and had too many bases getting isolated so were getting caught with rear charges too often. The pikes caught very little and eventually turned back but too late to intervene.
All in all a couple of fun games, thanks Arminius.

morbio and I will have to be a pass: despite trying listing as a custom game and him downloading, he still can't see Gaugamela.
Must be some flag that it is IF only.....
There is a simple answer..............buy IF!

It may be that it is now sorted... apparently the battle is not like I expected and it may be all OK. I'll test with Archie and if OK start with you ASAP.
