Train transport query

It seems that units transported in trains are only allowed to "unmount" in a city hex. Why can´t units dismount on any railroad hex?

I could understand that tanks and artillery may need special cranes and they need to be unloaded on a city but infantry units should be able to deploy anywere on the rail grid, isn´t? If not, why you are able to move the train into any free railroad hex if you are only allowed to dismount on cities? :?

This came up in beta as well, I believe the devs said they would look into it later to try and make trains a more attractive move option as now you have to run to a city, preferably that you own to dismount and the turns it takes to move mount then dismount you could almost move a unit there on their own.

It's for game balance.

Have you tried the low countries stand alone scenario as the Allies? You can rail xport units an amazing distance in one turn (from the coast to the fortresses at the front line) , likly take 4-5 turns by truck!

Also look at it this way... if an infantry unit is a division, it isnt only one train of 10-30 cars carrying the whole diviosn that can just jump out on a whim in the middle of a battle, but multiple trains moving men and equipment to a staging area (a city)

I agree.. Infantry should be able to dismount anywhere... Also maybe have less of a penalty for other items dis-mounting in a city - maybe let them move a smaller distance after... I agree with above, that the current format makes using the train pretty much worthless...

Just play more.

Trains are very useful I even use them in Poland!

They seem very usefull to me at a strategic level ,( uh assuming you have rail lines that is) but trains wernt really a tactical system

Either way, if they change the dismounting to be anywhere no sweat, as long as i can mod it back

When troops travel by train they dont have all their battlefield equipment on them. If they dimounted anywhere but a City (train station), they would be unable to get that equipment easily for the cars it was transported in. Get off in the middle of no where then take another full turn to resupply would be realistic. and partially defeat the use of the trains.

One more question to Train Transport. I mounted a troop to a train and then i see the hexes where i can move and if i move immediatelly everything is ok.
But if i click on another unit i am not able to move the train in the same turn. Does this work as aspected or am i doing something wrong?

thanks for help
Thomas

What you describe is not correct behavior. I tried it myself, and if I reselect the train after moving other units, I still can move it. So not sure why you cannot do it. Do you have a saved game illustrating the problem?

I have a saved game and try to recreate this. I remember that i mounted the troop in the city, so the train appears. Then i selected another unit and after this the train disappeard and the troop symbol was showing again. I couldn´t mount it anymore in the same turn.

Lets see, i try it again this evening.

If you disembark from a train without moving the unit ends its turn. Could that have happened?

There's your problem. Trains do not behave the same as trucks. You cannot toggle embark/disembark, if you do so, you lose the unit's turn.
Watch my video, it'll show how you maintain your unit move after you deselect the entrained unit.
