I am currently struggling on the Macedonia map so I need all the help and ideas I can get.

Here are my tips:

Use spying. It is vital to know what type of units the opponent is building. If you see the first cavalry unit being built, then you are ready with heavy infantry when he arrives.

Take advantage of the terrain on the world map. Attack his heavy units and cavalry when crossing mountains and his light units on plains.

More tips:

In battles lure the opponent into your type of terrain.
If you have light infantry then place them deep into forrest/hills to force the opponent to fight you there.

If your starting city is on plains then build Gish battle carts quickly. They are cheap and will rule the first part of the game on open lands.
