Generals with Elite Battle Groups

When a general helps an elite unit in closecombat the mechanism states that these groups get to re-roll threes (presumably this is optional - i.e. if you hit on three's you don't want to re-roll then?), however it then goes on to state that re-rolled three's cannot go below three.

Does this mean:

a) You keep on re-rolling until you get a three or higher

b) You count as having rolled a three if you throw a one or two?

It certainly used to say somewhere that a rerolled dice could not be any lower than the first roll so a roll of 3 rerolled to a 1 would count as 3. I also think that rerolls are optional but would need to check the wording in the rules.

They don't need to be optional if they cannot go lower.

is correct

See Glossary of Basic Mechanisms.

Re-Rolls "Apply to complex move tests, variable move rolls, combat dice and cohesion tests. Dice are only ever re-rolled once (i.e. they cannot be re-rolled again if they score the re-rollable score again.)"

So if Elites need 3+ to hit in either combat or shooting, they cannot miss?

Not quite.

The question was if you roll a 3 and reroll a 1 or 2 does it still count as a 3. So Elites with a general and a ++ can still miss but they need to roll 1 or 2 then another 1 or 2.
