Round beaches a bit, maybe

The art style of the maps I have seen so far looks a little too geometric. Wondering if in some future patch, they can make coastlines look less straightline or angular. Sicily should look like Sicily, not like Isoceles.

Otherwise, looks to be a great game about to launch. Good luck.

It's already somewhat possible to do, but the automatic terrain generator creates the appearances you currently see.
To create something more exactly along the lines you want requires manual effort. :)

The actual issue is that the maps are tiles. This allows us to release a map editor and for you to build your own maps. The compromise is that the maps are not hand drawn images but built up from components. We felt this slight reduction in variations on the map look was well worth it to allow a map editor.

Tiles is the way to go. PG2's hand painted maps look (for the time) good but often does not correlate well with the hex grid below it. Also it must be a huge effort to make a new map. Still I'd like to see a way to create custom tiles to give a map some 'personality', which I read between lines is possible as is, right? :)

Lemme put it this way: It is entirely possible to create a map without once ever invoking the automatic terrain generation feature, if one was so inclined to do so! :)

Yes you can change existing tiles or add new ones to the game's graphics files.

About coastlines, I'm thinking about some nice solution for them, so maybe in the future we'll have more realistic coastlines. No promises though. ;)
