Difficult Forward Moves

I played a game last night - Mid-Republican Roman vs. a Numidian opponent.....jeez, it was like herding cats....

Anyway, a couple of things came up about skirmisher movement about which I was unsure.

First:

Regarding "Difficult Forward Moves" on page 41, as follows:

A difficult forward move is one that includes a single wheel and/or is less than the troops' full available move distance - unless either:

a) All of the movement is more than 6 MU from any enemy (including enemy camp but not enemy commander's base), or

b) A commander is with the battle group or battle line. He must start the phase with a battle group and remain with it for the whole phase.

Sooooo......does this mean (and I refer to the Movement table on page 42) that when skirmishers are within 6MU of enemy troops, and they undertake a 90 or 180 degree turn, they can only then move straight forward without any wheel , i.e a simple advance. The rationale being that a wheel within 6MU would be a DIFFICULT forward move.

Second:

my opponent understood that skirmishers could have a free turn at the start or end of a move (in addition to anything else). I couldn't spot this anywhere, so is he right, or is he thinking of a.n. other set of rules...?

Cheers folks.

Hi there

If you look at the table on page 42 it does show that difficult forward moves are simple for skirmishers, drilled troops and undrilled cavalry or light chariots.

The main impact is on all other undrilled troops.

Also on page 42 under Turns, simple for skirmishers with both 180' and 90' are shown.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I read that...it just didn't seem clear (it's a terminology thing). It only came up a couple of times in the game, and didn't make a difference to the result though, so no worries...

Is it clearer now?

Hopefully if it isn't someone else can help as I'm just setting off to Milton Keynes for a weekend of wargaming.

Yup, that's fine if that's the way it's played...as a relatively new player, it's just sorting these little ambiguities out that crop up from time to time.

Thanks for the help.
