Upgrading unit costs

1939 Campaign - Invasion of low countries , Deployment phase

The cost of upgrading a unit can either be the DIFFERENCE in the cost between the two units, or the FULL price of the unit you are upgrading to. Is this correct?

A couple of examples (there may be more, but I was starting to get a headache :) )

Upgrading Wehrmacht Inf to Grenadier - Cost = Grenadier cost (100) minus Inf cost (90) =10 prestige. However upgrading to any other type of infantry unit costs the full price of the new unit.

Upgrading Pz36t to PzIIIf - Cost = PzIIIf cost (280) minus Pz38t cost (238) =42 Prestige. Any other upgrade costs the full price of the new tank.

I think if it's a natural progression (Like ME 110C to ME110D) then it is cheap, otherwise you pay full cost.

You may be right.

However, when I tried upgrading my "mountain" unit ALL units were full price.

I'll see what happens when I try to upgrade Grenadiers, and my PzIVd to whatever is the next available tank.

Ok, I 'm in the deploy phase of the third tutorial (The one where you get Bruckenpioniers).

As I said before, upgrading from Wehrmacht Inf to Grenadiers cost 10 prestige (Difference between Inf & Grenadiers). However, the cost of upgrading a Grenadier to a Bruckenpionier is 67 prestige, which is the FULL cost of Bruckenpioniers. BTW, Bruckenpioniers are the next unit in progression after Grenadiers.

Also cost of upgrading a PzIb to a PzIIc (the next tank in progression) was 67 prestige, the FULL cost of a PzIIc.

Any explaination as to how upgrade costs are calcuated would be greatly appreciated.

The cost of a Bruken Pioneer is 115 not 67 so you received a discount cost.

Cost of PzIIc is 192 not 67 if you are using new campaign in RC3

Razz1,

Thanks for the reply. I rechecked my upgrades and found the upgrade cost to Bruckenpioniers was actually 115 prestige (not 67, my bad :) ), and this is the full purchase price of Bruckenpioniers. Sorry for the confusion.

The purchase cost for PzIIc is 67 IN THE TUTORIAL. You are right, it is 192 in the campaign.

Any chance you could check upgrade costs during one of your campaigns? I just rechecked upgrading a Pz38t to a PzIIIf during the 1939 Campaign (Low Countries scenario) and the cost was the DIFFERENCE between the two (I think it was 42). Upgrading to ANY OTHER tank (even a "retrofit" to an older model) is the FULL prestige cost of the unit you're upgrading to. Something doesn't seem quite right.

Upgrade Sherman to a better sherman, pay full price of the better sherman.
Upgrade p51b to a D or H, pay full price of the D or H model.

Allied units should also receive this discount, no?

Pz 38t was a different chassis. I'm not sure it can be upgraded to a PZII. Don't remember. BUT it can be upgrade to some AT's as I know this was the case in WW2

Edit: They were upgrade to Marders, so all Pz 38t's should be able to upgrade to Marders for nominal cost.

Technically - yes. But this feature is important in a campaign. In single scenario mode you are unlikely to upgrade initial unit to another unit - in most cases you are better off buying a new one. So I guess we can consider this low priority.

From the previous posts it seems the logic / algorithms used to determine upgrade costs are more detailed then just calculating the difference between the purchase cost of the two units involved in an upgrade. Currently, a few upgrades are the difference between units but the vast majority are the full cost of the new unit. From a players perspective (especially those who aren't as familiar with WWII hardware as you guys) this may be slightly confusing. And remember the issue is the same for Infanty units.

My question is: Do you see any need to provide a more detailed explaination of the logic behind the calculation of upgrade costs, or should we just accept them at face value and not worry about how they're calculated? Either way, it's still a great game that should appeal to a broad spectrum of gamers.

If the tooltip could explain why one is more expensive than another it would be good.

I don't see how not knowing what the units are is relevant, anyone can compare the stats. The point of upgrading is to get a higher powered unit, but keep your hard earned experience, correct? So a formation of tanks pulls into town and takes delivery of their new vehicles. The question is, do the old units have any value?
Not sure how you would explain keeping prestige for soldiers though, since you are changing the men not just their machines.
