Mouse Scroll Wheel Trouble

Hi,
I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this or even better have found a solution for it.
After a many months' hiatus I have done some gaming(okay just hotseating so far). I'm finding one issue really annoying. The mouse's scroll wheel doesn't seem to work as a way to zoom in and out as it used to function many months a go. Maybe it's the updated game or updated java, I don't know, but here's the symptoms.
Whenever I touch the scroll wheel the game jumps into the maximum zoom in level. Regardless of whether I scroll to zoom out or zoom in. And the zoom level stays there if I don't change it using the keyboard. Well actually if I scroll the wheel backwards(zoom out) continuously in rapid succession the zoom level _flashes_ to outer zooms for a fraction of the second but always returns to the maximum zoom level. The mouse scroll wheel works as normal for other windows applications.
Any ideas or am I doomed?
