Movement in Combat

In two games last night - both had an example where we struggled with the wording on the rules. I'm surprised that it hasn't come up before , but anyway...
When approaching an angle, in a single rank... impact is initiated on a corner (single element). So, during the impact no problems. Then during the movement phase (to line up prior to melee) Those in corner pivot (or slide) - fine. Then The rest of the bases in the BG do they pivot and slide? Do they align , echeloning back? do they advance into contact? not strictly 'expanding' or 'contracting' is it? - rather just single base moves. At Usk there was a propensity for groups to align and get as many fighting as possible. But reading the rules its just not clear! (5.01 p34.)
Slide - can that include an orientation change. To me it implies a shift in the 'y' axis (front edge) only?
It was difficult to see how the rest of the group go into contact
