Round two of the geographically impossible, but right time frame, contest brought out a couple of points requiring clarification if you please:

1. A Swiss keil attacks and defeats a Ming unit providing rear support to an artillery unit. The Ming rout and the Swiss have to do an initial pursuit but roll lower so cannot catch the routers nor make it entirely through the now captured artillery.
As far as we could see the Swiss do pass entirely through the artillery as a) they started in contact with it and b) there was sufficient room beyond to fit the entirre unit in. Correct?

2. Gendarmes in support of the Swiss charge a 4 base(2x2) Ming unit which has their right hand file just in difficult going obliging the gendarmes to charge in a single element wide column hitting the file entirely in the open.
In the ensuing melee the gendarmes expand a base into the difficult going(and lose a die in the fight). The Ming lose the combat and test cohesion.
Does the modifier for medium foot losing vs mounted count ONLY if the number of hits caused by the base in the open exceeds that caused by the base fighting in the DG? In other words if the Ming scored no hits and the gendarmes scored one from the base in the DG then there is no modifier but if the gendarmes scored one in DG but two in the open there is?

3. A Ming unit charges a keil, already fighting to its front, in the flank. The first marginal point of contact is its friends rear so it simply drops back the offending bases and carries on until it hits the keil?

1) Yes, your reasoning on this is correct.

2) The modifier applies for losing the combat where the condition applies (in this case MF fighting mounted troops in open terrain). It does not matter which bases inflict the hits.

3) As long as you only need to reduce your frontage by one base, you are correct.

If any mounted base (that is fighting the medium foot) is wholly in open terrain, then the MF suffer the modifier if they lose the round of combat (whoever inflicted the hits). This would include a mounted base fighting only as an overlap.

So if the MF don't want to suffer the modifier, they really need to stay entirely in the terrain. (Or trail a few pikes).
