Hi looking at the book the pike is in back rank in the middle
How does it work? Does the owner move the pike to front rank if contact with mounted troops or melee foot imminent to protect the front rank muskets? Or do they move forward in the melee phase?

Check out the top of page 75. It is assumed that the pike base steps forward on contact in the impact phase and stays there until the BG is no longer in combat when it can return to it's back rank position. Simples!
