New Player with his Roman Late Republican List

Hello,
I have had the FOG rule for quite a while but never got around to putting together an army, until now :) . My background is 15mm DBA Macedonian and Successors minis mainly and 6mm Napoleonics, and in the past 5 years Flames of War. I had enough 15mm bases to put together some Macedonian lists but instead I wanted to start anew and try a different scale. So I grabbed myself some 28mm Late Republican Romans and Numidians from Wargames Factory and some Celts from Warlords. Here is my list for the LRRA, working on a 650point limit:

CiC-IC + Field Commander + 2 Troop Commanders = 200pts
Fortified Camp =24pts

CORE
Legionaries-HF/Armoured/Superior/Drilled/Impact Foot, Skilled Swordsmen. 4Bs@14each = 56pts
Legionaries-HF/Armoured/Superior/Drilled/Impact Foot, Skilled Swordsmen. 4Bs@14each = 56pts
Legionaries-HF/Armoured/Superior/Drilled/Impact Foot, Skilled Swordsmen. 4Bs@14each = 56pts
Veteran Legionaries-HF/Armoured/Elite/Drilled/Impact Foot, Skilled Swordsmen. 4Bs@17each = 68pts
Javelinmen-LF/Unprotected/Average/Undrilled/Javelins/Light Spear. 8Bs @4each =32pts
Archers-LF/Unprotected/Average/Undrilled/Bow. 6Bs @5each =30pts
Heavy Cavalry-Cav/Armoured/Superior/Undrilled/Light Spear, Swordsmen. 4Bs @16each =64pts
Heavy Cavalry-Cav/Armoured/Superior/Undrilled/Light Spear, Swordsmen. 4Bs @16each =64pts
Total: 650pts

Any comments on tactics, general list design, etc. Would be appericated muchly

Thank you

IMO
At 650pts I think you can manage with less generals. At 650pts I do IC, TC but IC, TC, TC would be more common. The non CinC FC is generally selected to aid flank marches which are not particularly suited to this army.
With the extra points beware of taking non-legion BGs as opponents will generally target these while avoiding the legion. You want them to have to fight the legion to break your army.

This army, because of its small size and high quality, probably doesnt need 4 generals. It certainly doesn't need both an IC and a FC. I would probably drop the FC entirely or at least downgrade him to a TC.

I think I would probably also drop at least some of the cavalry and take either some more legionaries or some MF/EL/LH?

Good luck with it, I think many of the new 28mm plastics look great!

On deciding which general to drop remember that FC are much more useful at 28mm than TC are due the the large base widths.

Except you practically don't NEED a general at all for this army, except for the rare time you need to bolster, and an FC doesnt help.

Light Cavalry-LH/Unprotected/Average/Undrilled/Javelins/Light Spear. 6Bs @ 7each = 42pts
Total: 643pts

I like the amount of Legionaries in this list. The Archers and Javelinmen would protect one flank while the Cavalry protect the other. I have gone for the IC and TC for the moment to see how it goes. I can imagine this army works by moving the legions towards the enemy camp and get into combat asap, am I right here?

Hopefully I get the workings of this army down pat  before I try moving onto a Gallic or Ancient British force

cheers

Oddly enought he IC can be a disadvantage in this army. Generally you want to move first to get the legion in someones face.

I would consider 3TC or FC and two TC.

Otherwise I like the philosopy - win or loose with the legions, and don't buy a bunch of other medium foot, Cavalry, or second rate allies that become targets.

Valid point Ian. If you were to take an FC (I still recommend against it) I'd make the FC a subbie. There may be the (extremely) rare circumstance that you wish to flank march. You can't do it with a C-in-C, but you can with a FC subbie and he's got a better chance of bringing home the troops.

I'd think, that with the size of this army you'll never want to flank march, however, you may find some situation where a single BG of cavalry might be 'just the thing' to harass the enemy flank as you destroy their centre (for instance, if you've got nothing else to do with them).

No they won't ! Don't be expecting anything like that from LF. That will get you into trouble.

It depends I suppose what is meant by 'protect'. They could slow the enemy down by depriving them of double moves, or shoot them down to fragged (unlikely). They might hold up in combat for a bit up a steep hill. But that's about the limit of it. I seem to always get my LF in trouble by aking them to do too much when unsupported :(
