The worst armies in FOG . . .

Now I know we are told that there are no intrinsically bad armies and that it depends on terrain and strategy and all the rest of it. And I can accept this argument for the most part. But I still think it is the case that some armies are irredeemingly naff. So this thread is for you to nominate the worst armies you have had the misfortune to fight with and get it off your chests. A cathartic thread if you like. And maybe at some point we can organise a tournament to find out which army is the worst of the lot!

Anyway, my first nomination is from SOA and it is the Late Medieval Swedish. They really are numpties and they consist of blocks of lumbering militia spearmen interspersed with crossbowmen who appear to be blind drunk all the time (0% seems to be their usual score when firing) plus mounted knights who have an aversion to charging. And they have not got any allies either (not surprising really seeing as they are so useless! ) A more hopeless combination is not to be found anywhere in the SOA roster, I'd wager.

So who would you like to nominate?

pete, i love the Swedes since when once in one of my former tournaments against russprov i played them and defeated his Swiss

in my experience, the worst army i ever encountered are the insurgent Jews of Legions Triumphant

Hear, hear, dont pick on the Swedes  Ianiow did very well with them in season 3. Fourth place, div A.
As for the Jews of LT I only have one game with them but I liked them. Beat a Roman army quite handily.
Have actually contemplated to chose them next season.
My candidate for worst army must be Seljuk Turks. No punch, only overpriced shooting cavalry...bleh.

Early Armenian List ( the ones with Kings in the list name are pretty good though)
Any protected hoplite army facing Pike armies
Skythian
I agree with Hidde , most "horse archer armies" (turks, mamelukes etc) in SAS are vastly over priced and underpowered....and lack options....

I have never used , nor seen any one use the later Galatian list(where all the warriors have become fat and lazy and are average) but i suspect its a real dog..

I think I'd take the Provincial Galatian list with 24 drilled inmitation legionaries and 2-12 Superior cavalry over the Early German list from LT. The Germans do get Gallic allies so aren't compeltely hopeless against terrain but if HF average impact foot isn't your thing, better steer clear.

Your likly correct about the Early Germans but I am biased as have had some fun (and moderate succes) using a giant horde of shaggies... No mico management to worry ya as they cant maneveur for *^@! so aim , fire and forget :)

In my opinion the early numidian list from ror is the worst army. Every units is LF or LC with javelin. The only person I have seen win with them is pantherboy, but rumour has it he had some guys armed with wet nuddles and beat an imperial roman army. So who knows.

Tarantines in the ROR: the pikes are butter! :?

Righto - well, we have made a bit of a start then. So far the nominations are . . .

SOA - Late Medieval Swedish

ROR - Early Armenians, Numidian (Juba) - I couldn't find a Tarantine army though, are they allies of someone?

IF - Skythian

LT - Jewish Revolt, Early Germans

S+S - Seljuk Turks

Keep them coming people and later on in the year I will devise a suitably naff tournament to establish which is the worst army in FOG for 2011. :D

Hmm - The Skythians in IF.

I don't think that they are that bad.

This may seem strange given I have just managed zero points in 7 games with them in LoEG5 but they did worry my opponents. Seriously (almost) to paraphrase a famous speech
"Never in Field of Glory have so many games been lost by so few points" and thats a reflection on my poor playing rather than the army list.

There is a lot of choice given the 'up to two allies' - a lot of versatility and they can manage any terrain type.

I'll contribute Later Granadine in SOA.

Despite the fact that the only time I played against it, I lost  .......is there much appeal to having 48 poor light foot crossbows firing every turn and giving you carpel tunnel syndrom for 47 "0%" results?

A second nomination.....Early Colonial Greek in IF.

As if protected hoplites were not fragile enough, how about poor protected hoplites? How about 80 poor protected hoplites? OK, you might win through sheer numbers, but think of the number of widows you are making.....your other troop choices max out at 200 points, so you will have alot of the poor hoplites at higher points....the only saving grace is the Athenian allies....the Colonial Greeks are so bad they make average armoured hoplites look like super-troops.

LT...I'm happy to be the Jewish Revolt any day. 24 Superior Impact MF...padded with 72 MF BPs for only 144 points? Cheesy, yes, but a terrible army to fight in rough terrain......

I actually like the swedes too. They have been used to good effect in league play.

Hmm . . . a bit of support is coming in for the Swedes now (are you all mad? ). So they may not get the nomination for SOA after all.

davouthojo has nominated Later Granadines but they are an awkward army to fight because they usually end up spread over the whole map and they are hard to pin down. They are a bit on the weakish side it is true, but I have beaten the Nueva Castilians with them. :?

Yes, OK. Where shall we fight? In Ireland?

Well, the Granadines have triumphed at 600pts. :D If they can win at 500pts then they will be deemed too good to participate in the NAFF 2011 tournament. It could be the Swedes representing SOA or it might be the Papal States. Stay tuned for developments.

+1 Provincial Galatians. But I think this is just a reflection on the normal Galatians being just so much better, why bother?

How can i forget: The Papal army

only army where i buy field fortifications so the poor quality defensive spears can maybe survive a little longer....
