Threatened flank.

Opinions please.

A unit of Gendarmes charges a BG of unsupported Artillery. In the same Impact phase its friend charges a unit of foot nearby. The foot lose the combat. The unit touching the Artillery are in a position to threaten the flank of the enemy foot during their test for losing the combat against their friends.

The question is whether the chaps who have contacted the artillery count as in combat even though no fighting is done in the normal sense of the rules which would mean they don't threaten the flank.

Supplementary question. In the manouver phase do the Gendarmes have to line up with the contacted Artillery.

Bonus question. The foot have friendly horse on that flank and in range to support the threatened flank but facing in the opposite direction. I could not see anything that said they had to be facing a particular way to cancel the threat.

cheers

They threaten the flank. The CT is post-combat so the Gendarmes cannot be in combat, as at this point the Artillery is not enemy.

The Gendarmes do not line up with the Artillery in the manouver phase as the "active player conforms his troops in close combat to enemy" and by then the Artillery is not enemy.

If they can physically charge the foot legaly in the flank at the point they take the test their flank will count as threaterned. Otherwise the the friendly Horse with cancel the threat.
