Gatling pistols

Hi guys, do any of you agree that the "pistol" factor should only last for the impact and ONE melee phase before they would be unloaded. As there is no chance to reload till after they are unengaged then they should use the "swordsmen" factor until this time. Melee can go on for several turns with the cavalry happily popping away this feels wrong somehow. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Nick

Personally I think pistols should get no melee factor at all when I face them with my impact horse and lose....Bloody dice grrrrrr :D

Consider it like this maybe?

Most mounted pistoleers carried a brace of pistols to use, giving them multiple shots.

A melee is not a cosistent engagement - it may be perfectly possible for some mounted troops to wheel out and reload while others fight.

The 'pistol' factor in melee may also represent a combination of the use of a pistol and other weapons (such as swords, but as skilled as 'swordsmen') in an extended swirling engagement.

Not sure, but if you feel it's wrong, make the amendments you feel are right i suppose!
How are you planning to have that affect the points value of pistol troops?

Also, in a unit of 500 pistoliers, not all 500 fire on initial impact.

As well as adding a small element of complication (having to remember if the melee is a continuing one or not) and begging the question of what happens when a BG with pistols that has been in melee for one or more rounds is contacted by a new enemy, this also would negatively change one of the current interactions to the detriment of those who may be seen to suffer from the current rules.

Specifically, if you have Impact Mounted/Swordsmen vs Pistol/Pistol, the former are at + POA if they disrupt the Pistols in impact. If the Pistol horse switched to Sword factors after the first melee they wouild lose that advantage.

Going to guess the authors would say that would make the game a little bit more complicated than it needs be.

I have been persuaded! Many thanks for all your comments. I hugely enjoy the rules and wait with eagerness for the Nap set.
