Battle Cards

I don't know whether I've missed something, but I can't find anything in the manual or the game explaining how to use the "Looting" card. There have been a few times when I have needed it but haven't been able to use it. I have tried using it on an enemy unit during the battle, but nothing happens and a couple of seconds later a message is displayed informing me that one of my units has left the battle?!

I'm using the PS3 version of the game and cannot access any of the battle cards beyond the intial two. I'm well into the campaign and have many cards supposedly available but I think I must have tried every combination of buttons possible to access them - all to no avail.
Is this a bug? Any ideas?

Looting sends one of your units off to loot the enemy camp. You lose the unit for the battle but get a cash reward.

You need to spend the upgrade points for your Commander to upgrade the ability to use more cards.
My head guy is level 6, and I spend ALL his points on getting access to new cards.
