GS how to get to work?

Firstly, I love this game. However, having bought the gold version from matrix I cant get the GS expansion to work. I have tried to follow the instructions on both matrix and slitherine forums. Though it is all quite jumbled and hard to follow, though that may be because I am not the most pc literate person in the world. I tried to put downloaded files into the folder for the game bought from matrix. When I try to run the game nothing happens apart from showing the intial screen.
Surely there must be an easier way to do this? This is probably a question fro matrix, but seeing as they have this 'check for latest version' function on their game, why do they not use this to upversion to GS?
Anyway, rant over and I guess I will just have to resign myself to playing with the original game.
