Has anyone tried using the Bow*, Light Lance, Sword, Armoured Average/Superior Cavalry. The Hungarian list can have 24 bases of them, up to 16 Superior. Has anyone used them, and have they been successful (in period and out of period)?

Problems are
Being Cavalry you are on a -1 when shot at by artillery (and also gunpowder weapons ?) when taking a cohesion test.
You get 2 dice of bow, and having the light lance will get no evade move, so might struggle against determined horse in period, when they will have + in impact for pistol v lance.
In melee against other dh you will find yourself down to 4 dice v 6 dice, at evens at best until one side or the other is disrupted or fragged.
Still, you never know those 2 dice might be enough to cause a test on opposing mounted, and then you have a chance if you are rolling the most dice.

Matteo
I will be interested in your experiences. I have tried them solo in the Polish army against Swedes, and Russians in Period and Swiss out of period but they are always in support of the Hussars and that tends to make things easier. Not sure if they can perform quite the same role supporting Gendarmes or Cavaliers.

That is sort of my experience. Maybe I will run them w/out the Lance and see how they go.

Maybe they are too expensive but are able to cover different roles, a good "last quarter in deply" unit.
I'll try to use them in order to give some shot to enemy mounted before charging with others (hussars and so on) so I'll try superior (they will have few shot, can't miss target)

Is this true? I read through the rules on evading several times and it appears it is based on the opponent being shock, not the troops who want to evade. It seems like shock troops are able evade without issue but can't be evaded against.

Shock troops cannot evade.
There is no restriction on troops evading from shock troops.

While what you are saying makes perfect sense, I can't find the rules reference. I'm looking at page 138 and it seems to say the opposite.
From the rules book on 138:
Mounted troops can break off if they are DISRUPTED or FRAGMENTED and at least half their close combat opponents are STEADY non-shock mounted troops or elephants.
It seems pretty clear. The section above which lists battle groups which cannot break off, there doesn't seem to be any reference to shock troops.
I checked the errata but didn't find anything there either.

You are confusing the evade with break off - they are separate things. Evades are covered on page 87.
