I have noted in discussions here that light horse are not very highly regarded. The Later Polish army has some proportional requirements on light horse/cavalry (per BG of Hussars), but then some additional light horse, Vlachs and Tatars.

As you have to have the cossack/petyhortsy/etc troops anyway to balance out your hussar buys, is it best to generally just take those as the light horse and ignore the Vlachs/Tatars?

Are the required/proportional lighter cavalry best bought as the very cheapest cossacks possible (light horse with carbine or bow), or are the Circassians (petyhortsy) or armoured cossacks a better buy to support the Hussars?

All of this assumes before 1670, so more the TYW and immediately post TYW period than the Great Turkish War period. So the pre-pancerni period.

I would take them as Superior Armoured Cavalry Carbine Pistol. (The compulsory Average Raytars supply the supports). I wouldn't bother with any Light Horse.

So far I have only fought one game with this army, but I was happy with the results. (Although my army was dated 1675).

Thanks for that, the next dimension is considering how the clash of empires and duty and glory lists overlap -- if you are interesting in doing poles near the dividing line, makes sense to think about the list specs for each ....

I swear by Light Horse, love them, they do work if used properly. I find the bow armed kind are great if given enough time to disrupt 4 man units.

From my admittedly limited playing experience I would agree, 2 BGs in the PLC and at least 1 BG in the Later PLC, placed in the last deployment quarter and carbine armed. Mine have proved highly effective due to my opponent losing a base by failing a death roll on most occasions they have fired. I know it is only down to dice luck really but I'm firmly of the view that you should stick with a design that seems to be working.

I prefer the joys of bows, ok not many death rolls, but they can cause tests which often is just as good.

Well and foot bow can throw a lot of dice on 0 POA againsthte late period unarmoured europeans.

Maybe the ideal list is bows, elephants, and (lots of) artillery. Anything else is probably just a distraction. Not sure who might qualify (Burmese or Hindus?).

I think both Muslim and Hindu Indian can offer bows and elephants but I think few artillery

To continue my point, Hindu and Muslim Indian have limited med or heavy arty but more light arty
Mughals have nellies guns and options to take bows which can be poor. However you also have to take minimumsof arquebusiers and light arty and expensive cavalry

I guess we are way off topic, but...

The Burmese can have 4 medium guns plus 2 Portugese ally medium guns.

Other interesting lists are the Indonesians and the Vietnamese. The vietnamese can have 2 heavy guns (plus 4 light). The Indonesians can have 4 medium plus 2 Dutch.
