How many Generals ?

Is there any consensus growing about the number/quality of Generals best suited to different numbers of BGs?

I'm regularily getting army size of 12 BGs, most of whom are fighting units, so I've been looking to get 4 TCs as far as possible. I haven't really had enough games to try out different variations so I was wondering if anyone has a rule of thumb for the best combinations?

You can never have too many generals. I prefer 4 tc to get along with.

Here is the breakdown from 2 recent UK competitions:

BHGS Challenge:

4xTC 10 players
GC, 2TC 1 player
FC, 3TC 1 player

Roll Call

4xTC 11 players
3xTC 1 player
3xFC 1 player
GC, 2TC 1 player

If 3 TCs does not sound enough, here are 2 potential things in favour:

1) It was used by one of the authors
2) He won the tournament

Well, 4 TCs seem to be flavour of the month, but I've just pointed out an 800pt Later PLC with 3 TCs that I really like the look of. I'll give it a go next time out and see how it performs.

I find you need one TC with each bg of the winged ones to get the best out of the army.

1 FC + 2 TC
the FC in this period in essential if you wanto to have hany brigade, 4" are not enough to get even 3 units

I have found needing 4 generals less common than in AM and have found a number of occassions where I had 3 quite sufficient. Once I had 2 witht he 3rd never arriving by flank march and even then it wasn't that bad. I lost, but not because I didn't have the extra general.

Exactly. the requirement for the units to be 1" apart really reduces the TC's range. I made that mistake in my first games. Always at least a FC from now on.

I am missing something. I use the following formation frequetly do I have something wrong?
X, Y, Z are all 1 base width away from each other. The T is the TC everyone within range and the TC touches Z.

___ZZZ

With mounted I think you can do 3 BGs up front if the center one is only 2 bases wide.

Depends on the period & army. Try it with multiple tercios or pike keils & their supporting shot.

T must be behind unit where his attached, not on side

T can be in front of ZZZ, as long as he maintains edge to edge and corner to corner contact with the central base he counts as with the BG for movement purposes (p69) and would be within command range for the purposes of divisional moves.

Code: Select all

xxx_xxx_xxx
.....T
xxx_xxx_xxx
Here a TC can command 3 frontline units, plus 3 supporting units... it seems to me quite enough! :D
