I will be running a FoG:R Open on Thursday, in addition to the Friday tournament and the Thursday teaching games. I am doing it so that I can have a chance to play FoG:R in addition to the FoG:AM events I am running. I know: I am a greedy bastard. The announcement from the Historicon PEL is below.

Thursday July 7

Field of Glory: Renaissance Open Tournament

Each player should bring a legal 800 point army from any published FoG:R army list book. First round pairings will be random. 15mm only.

Round 1: 10:00 – 1:30
Round 2: 2:30 – 6:00
Round 3: 7:00 – 10:30

Player with questions are encouraged to contact the GM, Marc Crotteau, at juvenileshark@yahoo.com.

Please note that Bob Nedwich will be running two FoG:R teaching games starting at 12:30 and 6:00.

We had a very good turnout.

Matt Iverson won with his Qing Chinese Bow meister.

Well they conquered a considerable land mass and hung around until the 20th century.

Don't forget it was run by one of the top US players.

I would add that I don't think people thought through how to attack it since it was so new. Much like your reaction to Elephants.

Presumably the Polish/Russian 8 man Haiduk/Streltsy types would be a good counter to the bow ?

Possibly, but the bows are cheap, they have front rank light spear, and regt gun. I think armored pikes, halberdiers, or spears woud be better. They may also be vulnerable to horse.

I think 6 base European mixed pike/musket BG's of the mid to late 17th century seem weak against Qinq "firepower".

If the Qing Chinese don't qualify as a historical superpower, it is hard to think who would in the FOGR period. For one thing, they would have been the most populous state in the world during the period.

I meant from the point of view of later technology outperforming them RBS.

And the fact that Matt choose the cheaper but longer ranged bow over the arquebus,

At this point I don't know if the rules give an advantage to the cheaper & low tech army or they just put them on an equal footing. I suspect the latter, as Dan Martz's ECW army (configured as a shooting army rather than a pike & shot army) gave me quite a run for my money. I suspect that a large portion of the Qing's success this time around was that I was fighting lists optimized for fighting other pike an shot, i.e. high quality but small. Given the new lists in Colonies and Conquest and Cities of Gold, folks are going to have to put real thought into designing armies that can also deal with a "hordes of average foot list." Some of them are quite potent.
