Shooting ranges

I read in the design philosophy that the game was designed around the effective shooting range of archery (or words to that effect). What does that mean in practice?
One can easily imagine that English longbows (or medieval crossbows, et cetera) would have a longer effective range than peasant levy archers (say Irr Bw(i) in DBM terms). Skirmishing archers might have a shorter effective range even with the same equipment and training simply due to the smaller volume of missiles. And then there are horse archers . . . .

Horse archers and foot archers have different ranges. The comment is more that the land scale has ben built around this. For example the Strategikon talks about rear support deployment in terms of effective bow ranges...that's all. Basically the critical thing is to make sure that all mechanisms work to give the desired efect and feel and this has remained the priority throughout.

So... given the comment in another thread that one MU = approximately 2.5 cm, would we be looking at a range for foot bows of about 5 MUs (12.5 cm)?
Cheers,

Just a bit of elementary deduction, really.

Ahhh... even better!

What's the penalty tor shooting at Long Range & do all bows gets to shoot at Long range?
Are Handgunners the same range as Javelinmen & Horsearchers, or do they have longer range?
Cheers,
Jer

Handgunners and javelins have an effective range of 2 MU, horse archers have an effective range of 4 MU but no long range as do slingers.

Long range (foot bows, longbows, foot crossbows) reduces shooting dice by a third. For heavy artillery it reduces dice to half.

What's the Range for Artillery, Effective & Long?

Sounds good. Would Roman Late Republican/Principate legionary light ballistas count as small or big stuff?
Many thanks,
Scott K.

As the lists presently stand, the Principate ballistae can be Light or Heavy, the Late Republican ones are just Heavy.

Is there any noteworthy difference in shooting between Trebuchets, Roman CaroBallistae & Bombards, or do they just all come under Heavy Artillery?
Cheers,
Jer

Roman carro-ballistae would count as Light artillery. (Though they can also have Heavy Artillery bolt shooters and stone throwers).
The others are simply treated as Heavy Artillery, as any distinctions would have to be based almost entirely on speculation.
The general rules design policy is to keep things simple unless there is a sound historical basis for differentiating troop tactics or effects.

Cool - can some Artillery still fire over friendly troops, or do they have to be on a hill to do so now?

They have to be on a hill.
We are trying to avoid representing Roman carro-ballistae as some sort of super-weapon.
