i discovered that in the the tournament "petites guerres" last week end:

a BG charging in a legal position for a flank charge but hits at first a front corner and hits a rear ranks when it presses forward. One told me that it isn't a flank charge? and most people agreed. Where is that situtation descibed in the rules?

On page 56, "For a charge to count as a flank or rear charge, the first part of the enemy battle grop contacted must be the side or rear edge or rear corner of one of its bases".

This issue has puzzled me for some time, but we have happily played it our own way.

Page 55 1st dot point gives the 2 basic conditions that are easily understood, but page 56 1st dotpoint seems to exclude a charge from the forward left or right of a BG (where p.55 dotpoint 1 applies) and the first point of contact is the front corner and not side.

If this is correct then you need a correct wheel to avoid the corner first contact and make a side first contact.

Or the definition of "...first part of the enemy battle group contacted..." treats a step forward side edge contact as also being the "....first part..."at teh same time as the front corner contact and it is a valid flank charge.

Which way does this go?

It works in conjunction with the no wheel within 1 MU of flank. So if you can't wheel because you are too close it will not be a flank charge if you hit the front corner and then step forwards.

The way that I've always seen this played is that if the first contact is with the front corner then that is not a flank charge, even if a base that steps forward then hits a flank edge.

As you say, if you are in a posistion where you meet the other requirements for a flank charge, but your first contact would be with the front corner, you can wheel to ensure that you contact the edge, provided you start more than 1 MU away from the target.
