Regimental guns

Someone please talk to me about regimental guns: are they worth it or not? When I am designing Swedish lists I feel as though they are needed because the salvo BGs don't get enough shooting dice otherwise. But they are expensive.

Hi,
Regimental guns are a useful addition to any battlegroup. Having taken the field on a couple of occasions with my Early Imperial Germans against the Early Swedish you will need the regimental guns to improve your firepower. Once they go in the Swedish battlegroups are almost unbeatable, but in both of our games German firepower has disrupted the majority of the Swedish battlegroups so that they failed to go in.

I think reg guns are a must, especially for any Swedish BG of Ave. RBS recommends them for the commanded shot.

I find that the Regimental guns have a strange effect, in that they really improve the shooting of the more combat oriented foot, such as Swedes or TYW French. With the guns one of these BGs will outshoot a "normal" P+S BG (and even if they also have guns you are still even), whose only option is then to move within Effective range in order to gain the benefit of extra shooting dice. This then puts them within your charge range, and the extra dice in combat doesn't hurt either.

I have rather gone off using regimental guns for normal pike and shot. My reason is that although they increase the firepower of BGs, they do not in any way increase their resilience. For the cost of a few regimental guns you could have another BG of pike and shot.
So I think it is very much a trade-off. It certainly isn't a no-brainer. (Except for salvo Swedish to compensate for poor firepower without).

I plan to base mine on 40mm bases - I'm struggling to fit them onto the size recommended - and it means they can double as Light Artillery in other lists.
Will that cause me any problems?

Probably not.
My figure painter based them on 40x20 bases, but the wrong way round. This may be a factor in my reluctance to use them.
I am tempted to use guns without bases.
Who makes the smallest available 15mm guns?

I mount mine on the same base as foot, with a couple of crew. Peter Pig make the smallest I have seen in their 15mm ECW range.

I use artillery from my 6mm collection on 40 by 15mm bases. I think it looks good when you are using 15mm figs.
cheers

For TYW I am using Peter Pig very light guns (2 to a pack) on a 20mm x 20mm base without any gun crew. It looks fine and being on a small base does not get in the way and are readily identifiable as regimental guns rather than light artillery.

As they are for markers, I use 10mm scale guns........

Good idea - even better than 6mm. (OTOH I already have 6mm guns, just need to rebase them)

Cool, and thanks for the input everyone.
Next question: I have never been able to quite get my head around the way they shoot. Are they always at a 0 POA? And what is their shooting arc? Is it a normal shooting arc, measured from the middle of the BG (where the RG marker is placed)?

Yes to both I believe Marc - but I don't claim to be an expert on FoG:R
Only situational factors affect RGs - eg the target is in close combat.

The Regt gun marker indicates that the unit has a Regt gun, not the position of the gun, hence the difference in base size is imaterial. The POAis automatically added to the overall score of the unit, no matter where the gun model is.

They always
start at 0 POA, prior to situational factors (e.g. cover)

Maybe if you knew a figure manufacturer you could get them to design a proper fitting size?

Go with the Light Guns!
The guys are currently working on a range of Highlanders to complement the Scots they do. I'm hoping for a Montrose too.

Having faced Jim's 6mm guns twice myself I think they look really good. I have tried small 15mm light guns and they can really fill at 20mm deep base.
If I had the 6mm guns already painted I would surely use them with my Salvo Swedes.
