Moving Into Overlap

BG's X, Y and Z are3x2 and facing up. Enemy BG's A, B are 4x2 and facing down.

X and Y are shock troops who fail their CMT and charge straight forward into A and B in the impact phase. Now, in the Maneuver Phase, is BG Y allowed to move into overlap position by moving straight forward? Y can make legal overlap contact with one file of A and one file of B. However it will also contact a file of B that is not currently involved in a melee at all. Is this legal, or would Y have to wait for its next impact phase and charge?

Thanks, Terry G.

I'm sorry, the first post should have said "BG's X and Z" charge in the impact phase.

You must wait the next impact phase. You cannot overlap if you contact the front of a base.

I agree, Y must wait until its next impact phase and charge into contact; it cannot move into an overlap from its current position. Overlap means overlap, as distinct from face to face contact.

you can only walk into an overlap position if you will not make contact with an enemy base, in this case they would contact enemy so they must charge the enemy base.

And I would just add that if you were allowed to do this, the possibility of shock troops failing CMTs when you want to hold off from the enemy would not be nearly so concerning.

Plus there might be the possibility of a certain amount of cheese - e.g. if you have troops who are disadvataged in impact against the opponents right in fron of them, only charge with friends on either side so you can walk straight into contributing during meee only.

Both of which are IMO probably good indications that you shouldn't be allowed to do it!

Technically he means front edge contact. corner to corner or side to side is permitted.
