moving in a zone of thingo

I am umpiring a comp in a couple of weeks and thinking of the following and how I woudl rule:

consider LH in a zone 9within 2 inches of an enemy front

L = light horse facing left
H = pike facing up

LL
1 inch gap
HH
HH

There are three dot points that are pertinent here.

The Lh can:
A - Wheel to be parrallel with H frotn edge
(If the LH are facign left a wheel to achieve this will bring them outside the zone)

B - Stay in place. Can expand but not contract
(this is clear - list what can be done if you dont move)

C - make <any> that ends further away so long as the BG stays partially to the front of H
(I have seen people claim that <any> icludes the stay in place options even including contracting so long as they end further away)


eg After a contract (claiming optin C)

2.5 inch gap
HH
HH

I would rule this as illegal assuming that any move assuming that the intent of C is for moving away rather than formation changes/turns - which are clearly covered in B.

Too strict?

What aboput the dodgey option A

As shown A would remain in front of the pike when it wheeled, however, if the front of the LH is not infront of the pike a wheel would place it out of the zone. The option then to advance if it wishes could then take it down the side of the pikes. I have not seen this done but IMO it would be legal.
Interesting take on C. I have always played it that you cannot contract when pinned (in the restricted area).

The rule says you cannot contract while stationary in a restricted zone. C would be illegal IMHO as the LH BG did not move.

You can't contract in a restricted area. So the LH can't do this.

Anyway, why would they want to? They can turn right and move out of the pike charge range (but within 4MU so shoot them). Or they can turn 180 and then wheel to be parallel to the Pike so shoot (I think)

If the LH start in the zone, then they must end within the tram lines of the front of the pike. Therefore wheeling out of the zone and moving down the side of the pike would not be legal.

I think I have mydot point hierarchy mixed up in any case
I can see that stayin in front applies to all of the dot point options so no wheeling outside the zone anyway.

Not sure without the rules in front of me, but I think the "any move ending further away" would allow a contraction in place, as a contraction in place is a move. If not, then a contraction followed by an advance of a gnat's todger could not be construed as remaining in place, so would be permitted. Is it clarified in FAQ?

I suspect you'd be OK with a small move combined with a contract. However, staying still is surely not and option. The troops are allowed to remain in place but cannot combine doing that with a contraction. If they move, there's not limitation on the contraction.
