FOG Wiki Idea

First of all, I love the idea of the wiki. It is great to have a resource where I can browse through the topics and learn more about FOG and history. I was wondering though. In the sections that talk about each specific army, would it be useful to list the historical opponents? Even a brief listing of major events involving that particular army might be useful. I like to play DAG games starting at a certain time period and place in history i.e. Greece and the Balkans in 350 BC and work my way through the various historical campaigns using DAG armies. Having a list of events on the wiki would be useful.

Just an idea.

I'm wondering if this wouldn't simply replicate Wikipedia? I know I look up most of the information you mention there.

It is true, most of the information is on Wikipedia, but I find I have to dig a lot to get something concise.

I had something like this in mind, but maybe it would take too much to maintain.

513 BC: Persians and Thracians defeat the Scythians.
-------Early Achaemenid Persian (b) (545-485 BC) vs Early Scythian (750 - 550 BC)
-------Thracian (450-300 BC) vs Early Scythian (750 - 550 BC)
513-512: Persians conquer the Thracians.
-------Early Achaemenid Persian (b) (545-485 BC) vs Thracian (450-300 BC)
507c: Thebes defeated by Athens.
500: Thracian town of Menebria is taken by Dorian Greek Colonists.
-------Early Colonial Greek (700 - 451 BC) vs Early Gatae (450 - 300 BC)
499-449 BC: Greco-Persian Wars
- 499: Thracians on Galipoli Peninsula revolt against the Persians.
- 497-496: Persians conquer most of Thrace.
--------Early Achaemenid Persian (c) (483-461 BC) vs Thracian (450-300 BC)
- 495c: Persian army unsuccessfully besieges Lindos on Rhodes:
- 494: Thracians and Scythians defeat the Greco-Persian forces, throwing off their yoke.
--------Scythian (313 BC) vs Early Achaemenid Persian (c) (483-461 BC)
- 494: Sparta defeats Argos at Sepeia (unrelated to Persian wars).
- 492-490: First invasion of Greece:
- 492: Persians cross Hellespont and re-subjugate Thrace and Macedonia.
- 490: Darius I lands on the coast of Greece, capturing Eretria.
- 490: Darius lands at Marathon, where he is defeated by the Athenians.
---------Early Achaemenid Persian (c) (483-461 BC) vs Early Hoplite Greek (750-450 BC)
- 480-479 BC: Second invasion of Greece:
- 480: Xerxes invades, but delayed at Thermopylae.
---------Early Achaemenid Persian (c) (483-461 BC) vs Classical Spartan (Corinthian allies) (750-451 BC)
- 480: The Persians conquer all of Boeotia and Attica.
- 480: Athens is captured and burned.
- 480: The Persian fleet is beaten by the Greeks at Salamis.
- 480 Xerxes retreats to Anatolia with part of the army, leaving the elite units with Mardonius in Greece.
- 479: Persians under Mardonius defeat the Athenians and destroy Athens again.
- 479: Greek alliance defeats Mardonius at Battle of Plataea and naval victory at Mycale.
- 479: Retreating Persian forces attacked by Macedonians on their way back to Anatolia.

I think the DBA miniatures rules gave a list of viable opponents for each army in their book? I haven't got the rules anymore but it might give you something to go with if you can get a copy.

Using DBA is a good idea and I do have the rule set. I was just thinking it might be useful to have something like that included in the wiki so it would be specific to FOG armies and available to everyone.

Nice idea!

Have a look at madaxeman's FOG TableTop site. He does a great "Historical Overview" section that might fit your needs.

The easiest solution, would be to add a link in the top - I have just done this for the "Later Scots Island and Isles" army. Look, feedback: Does this work?
Maybe we combine the two wikis at some future date....for now I think it is easier to build out content separately - I'm not into the commercial side.

But this will happen at a GLACIAL PACE without help! Can I invite our grognards to write up some tips on their favorite army?

See an example here http://fog-pc-wiki.wikispaces.com/Later ... +Highlands

Just organise into army selection tips and battle tips - either post here, send me in a PM, or hit "EDIT" and post directly on to the wiki!
