Protection

Apologies if this has been covered already. As A FoG R newbie I only have the first army book.
Protection is described on pages 125 & 126 and it appears to say that the pike have to be the front rank.
On page 33 we have a picture of a late pike and shot BG with the sole pike base in the back rank.
Does that mean all of the shot are not protected?
Or do the later lists give them a bayonet or similar to compensate?
