What causes squads to gain experience?

Am I correct in thinking that squads gain experience only for kills and therefore 20 kills for 10 losses is better than 15 kills for 5 losses?

The reason I ask is that when I first fought the "Perigord - Night Attack" scenario my tactics were poor and I suffered a lot of casualties before scraping a win, the final result being 165 kills for 62 losses. I re-fought the scenario and did a lot better, finishing with 137 kills for 24 losses. By any "real world" standard my performance the second time was much better, yet looking at the experience point level of my squads, my first attempt was better (ie earned more experience points) than the second.

It is only for kills. If you want something more realistic try blood mode. In this mode you must pay for every casualty you lose so if you lose too much you cannot afford new equipment (only in the PC update at this stage).

Thanks for that quick response.

Later perhaps. It's tough enough on "Normal"!
