Winning initative and terrain selection

Hi
I am not sure if there is a more appropriate place to post this. I am happy to receive guidance.
I have start playing playing the game online in the LoEG.
The initative and terrain selection process doesn't seem to be ideal. I have seen comments that it is better to lose the initative - to get the first move. And I have taken this advice to heart and dropped the Inspired commanders from my roster.
What can make it worse is winning the initative and ending up in a position no sane commader would ever place his army. There are not that many different maps - so I am sure that many of those reading this will know the one I mean. Broadly speaking it is a series of crests (hills) running from top left to bottom right - starting with steep hills. I have for the second time won the initative and ended up sitting at the bottom of these hills.
The first time I played on this map I got killed trying to fight uphill. This time I will sit and wait - which doesn't make for a very interesting game.
I wonder how difficult it would be to allow the player winning the initative to select which side of the board to play.
Personally I would like even greater influence over the terrain - to justify the cost of an inspired leader - but this would do for a start.
I am interested what others think.
Jon
