Just wondering what interest there would be for a "Starter Army" competition, maybe limited to a couple or three books, Rise of Rome, Immortal Fire, etc.

Played on 4' x 4' tables with preset terrain, for speed of setup.

Day 1: 3 games (2 hour 45 min games)
Day 2: 2 or 3 games (2 hour 45 min games)

Thoughts??

No, I didn't forget it. "Somewhere between May and July" is as useful to potential travelling Ozzies (the motivation for my post) as tits on a bull!

Possibly a topic for discussion over a few beers at IWF. In Wellington the Experience has been positive we have had one person come down from Auckland to play in the 600 point starter army comps.

Hey we have even played a 200point comp on 3 by 3 tables (free TC).

But with like everything you probably wouldn't want to play solely 600point or 200point games all the time.

Whe have tried 400 pt with half minimums on a 3x4 which worked well. Never thought of going as low as 200pts. Might have to give it a try

The first FOG comp in Australia (i think) was Throw Down The Gauntlet. The games were 550 points on 4ft x 3ft tables. The only change to lists or rules was a reduced deployment distance and 1 fewer optional terrain pieces per player. This worked really well and allowed 5 games in a day and a half.

For some reason the results are not on the rating pages. If they were it might be useful to see what armies were taken in this format.

Not for everyday gaming but nice for a change and an easy way to learn.

The starter army idea is an interesting one. Despite the name, I am not sure that many players start with a starter army. Sometimes they contain interesting combinations of troops. Might be hard for players with limited forces to pick a list.

Thanks for posting these. Many of these are close to Aussie comp dates. August sticks out though as a possible.

Our tourneys are a laid back affair. People can always uses proxies if they are missing a few bases.

I'm down to play at Battlecry in February, I'm taking my medieval Swedish army, so I'll post up some results and army lists once it's over. Can't remember how many players there are, but there's at least six from the South Auckland Wargames Club where we play FOG almost exclusively now.

late medieval, lots of militia backup up by a few knights, mounted crossbows, handgunners and some mounted companions. The militia are fairly nasty in a stand up fight, but the army is a bit small, and slow, and undrilled, so once my flank is turned it's pretty much all over.

Call to Arms is hosted by the Wellington Warlords.

Following on
from last year’s enjoyable competition, we have decided to carry on with that format, but this year it will not be themed to give everyone the opportunity to put their favourite army on the table.

Armies will be limited to 600 points and will be played on a 5’x3’ table with pre-set terrain. There will be 5 x 2.5 hour rounds.

The scoring of the tournament will also differ to the official scoring system. This is to encourage people to not only play the game competitively but to play it in good spirit. We also want to encourage and recognise the efforts that people make in the presentation of their armies.


We already 6 people who have said they will be definitely attending, and another 4 who would like to attend
