interesting stuff

We've had few cases of horse (whether cuirassiers or cavaliers) going into steady foot. One thing to remember is the ability to break off if it goes badly for you. I'm almost at the point where I can remember I can do this!!

Our Lens 1648 historically-based scenario was set up for the Spanish to charge a French infantry BG in the first turn - one of the newer units sans Pikes, with results ranging from a fairly quick break to a more protracted fight, but generally wise horse charge pike & shot frontally only when in a position where they are forced to do so since standing under fire is worse - if they don't win, a break-off at least gets them back to long range. This is a frustration in the game which mirrors historical reality - just as does the delight of fighting and gaining a successful flank charge position on a pinned infantry line.

The concluding comment "Always amazed how much I like FOGr compared to Ancients version." is echoed fairly frequently. Interesting to think about the extent this is due to the rules differences, or differences in the periods, or differences in player base and preferences.

FOG is a fine set of ancients rules, but looks like it's headed down Revision Road - something I don't think will happen to FOGR as it's pretty polished as it stands.
