Why would I dismount my general?

I notice in browsing the army management screen that I can have my general dismounted if I wish. However, as best I can tell, all the stats for a dismounted general are the same or worse. So, is there a benefit to having Sir William on foot? The only one I can think of is that on foot I can vary his aggression level but I can't see much use for that. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance,
Geoff.
