Paul, I would expect it to be Portsmouth - St Malo that is the nearest for the ferry - and the roads from St Malo to the Cote d'armor are good and usually quite empty in my experience. Not sure about airports.

st malo seem to me the best with a ferry
1h30 from loudeac
and dinard for the plane (ryan air)
1h30 as well

would love to-maybe next year; it is Whitby goth weekend so i will be out with my lady dressed to the nines and watching lots of attractive ladies wearing basques and other assorted outfits
